The key to successful travelling abroad in your car can best be described in one word: preparation.

Do you need an International Driving Permit or extra motor, personal or medical insurance?

There are many things to consider and a good starting point would be to ask your motoring organisation and your insurance broker for advice.

Here are some helpful hints for travelling in Europe (those marked + are actually legal requirements in some countries!):

  • Fit headlight beam converters so that you don't dazzle oncoming traffic+
  • Carry a first aid kit, fire extinguisher and some spare light bulbs
  • Always take a warning triangle in case you breakdown+
  • Display your nationality plate or sticker on the rear of your vehicle+

When planning your journey, remember that one kilometre is equivalent to 0.62 of a mile.

As a general rule of thumb, if you multiply the number of kilometres you need to travel by six and place the decimal point before the last figure, you can get a pretty accurate conversion.
